U.S. liquefied natural gas (LNG) exports reached an all-time high in September, hitting 9.4 million metric tons according to new data from financial firm LSEG. The United States remains the world’s largest LNG exporter—and Louisiana continues to lead the way.

Preliminary data show Louisiana accounted for about 61% of all U.S. LNG shipments in 2024, with 81 tankers departing the state’s ports between September 3 and October 1. That represents roughly two-thirds of all American LNG exports during the period, according to Bloomberg.

The state’s success is driven by world-class facilities along the Gulf Coast, including Cheniere Energy’s Sabine Pass terminal in Cameron Parish—the world’s largest LNG export facility with capacity to move 29.5 million tons per year. Other major Louisiana projects, such as Commonwealth LNG in Cameron Parish and Venture Global’s Calcasieu Pass expansion, are adding to the state’s growing reputation as the global hub for natural gas exports.

“Louisiana is leading the nation in LNG exports and it is crucial that our leaders continue to support the policies that have unleashed this dominance,” said Tommy Faucheux, president of the Louisiana Mid-Continent Oil & Gas Association. “Louisiana’s energy industry is revitalizing our state’s economy and creating the opportunities that will keep our kids here in Louisiana.”

Since taking office in January, President Donald Trump has renewed the nation’s commitment to “energy dominance,” cutting red tape and speeding approvals for new LNG capacity. That approach has enabled Louisiana exporters to meet surging international demand, particularly from Europe and Asia, while strengthening the state’s position as a cornerstone of U.S. trade.

In September, Europe imported 6.22 million metric tons of American LNG—about two-thirds of total exports—while Asia accounted for another 1.63 million metric tons. The remainder went to Africa and Latin America, reflecting how Louisiana’s ports are fueling economies worldwide.

With continued private-sector investment and a supportive federal posture, Louisiana’s LNG industry is propelling both the state and the nation into a new era of energy-driven growth.
