Louisiana’s land and natural resources have long been the backbone of our economy. As a landowner we at RoyOMartin know firsthand how vital it is to balance economic growth with responsible land management. That’s why we support carbon capture and storage (CCS), a proven, safe technology that strengthens our industry’s future while keeping Louisiana at the forefront of sustainable development.
Carbon Capture and Storage isn’t just an abstract concept, it’s a key part of our land development strategy. It provides an opportunity to maximize the value of our land while supporting industries that fuel our economy. By allowing for responsible carbon storage, we can ensure that Louisiana remains a leader in energy and industry while continuing to manage our forests and lands effectively.
We are confident that the decades of research and real-world experience confirm that CCS can be done safely and effectively. Louisiana has the opportunity to lead in this space, but that means allowing responsible projects that benefit businesses, communities and the state to move forward.
Carbon Capture and Storage makes the timber industry more resilient, allowing us to weather market fluctuations while creating new opportunities for growth. The Louisiana timber industry thrives when landowners can fully utilize their resources, and CCS can be a critical tool in ensuring that we can do just that.
We need strong backing from our leaders and community members. As evidenced by recent plant closings, international competition in the pulp and paper industry, as well as other industries that rely on wood as a raw material, is only getting tougher and affecting local families and communities. The carbon footprint of operations is becoming a key differentiator, and local companies need every tool available to stay competitive. If utilizing carbon sequestration is what’s needed to compete, the good news is the solution is right here under our feet and, more importantly, in the parishes where we operate today. That means the jobs and economic benefits stay where they belong, in Louisiana.
Louisiana’s economy has always depended on industries that use our land whether it’s timber, farming, energy, or manufacturing. With CCS, we have a chance to embrace innovation while maintaining our commitment to responsible land use. We urge leaders and the community to stand with landowners in this effort so we can continue investing in Louisiana’s future. As concerned stakeholders, we ask that you please take time to research the science behind the process and listen objectively to those who have real experience and expertise in this field. All landowners are neighbors in the community, raising their families and nurturing our natural resources and our environment along the way.
The bottom line is this: CCS is safe, it’s good for business, and it’s essential for Louisiana’s long-term economic success. At RoyOMartin, we are committed to our communities, responsible development, protecting our environment and we believe CCS can be a critical part of that future.
Cade Young is the vice president of land and timber at RoyOMartin.
