OPINION: Don’t Balance the Budget on the Backs of America’s Seniors

Seniors across Louisiana are watching what happens next in Washington, especially when it comes to protecting Medicare Advantage and what it could mean for the care they count on.
As the next federal budget is being heavily debated, there is growing discussion of using Medicare Advantage to offset the cost of other priorities in reconciliation. That would be a mistake. Any cuts would be a disservice to some of the most vulnerable people in this country: our seniors.
Over 523,000 Louisianans rely on Medicare Advantage, and it’s easy to see why. The program delivers services traditional Medicare doesn’t cover, including dental, vision, and hearing benefits, comprehensive prescription drug coverage, caregiver supports, and more. With these offerings, the program goes beyond just a list of benefits. Medicare Advantage improves seniors’ quality of life, supports critical preventive care, and caps out-of-pocket costs – providing enrollees with both financial stability and peace of mind.
Congress should not attempt to balance the budget on the backs of older Americans by cutting a program that truly works for nearly 35 million people nationwide. Decisions made now will shape not only their access to care, but their ability to age with dignity and security.
Lawmakers have a responsibility to protect programs that support the health and well-being of their constituents, and Senator Bill Cassidy and Speaker Mike Johnson should lead the way to ensure Medicare Advantage remains strong. Protecting it means safeguarding access, affordability, and the promise of healthier aging for those who need it most. Now is the time for Congress to prioritize what is working.
